Greenville, S.C. — If Ohio State fans expected a steady, survive-and-advance kind of afternoon, the first 20 minutes against TCU delivered the opposite. At the break in the East Region first-round matchup, the Horned Frogs have seized control with a 39–24 halftime lead at Bon Secours Wellness Arena, putting the Buckeyes in an immediate hole with the bracket on the line.

How we got here: TCU’s pace, shot-making, and a late surge

TCU didn’t just edge in front — it took the game over. The Horned Frogs closed the half on an 11–0 run over the final 2:43, turning what could’ve been a manageable deficit for Ohio State into a full-blown uphill climb. The run was punctuated by timely perimeter shots and quick-strike offense that kept the Buckeyes from ever settling in.

Ohio State’s best moments came when it could generate second chances and find rhythm looks, but those stretches were brief. TCU’s pressure and activity forced the Buckeyes into uncomfortable possessions, and the Frogs consistently made them pay at the other end.

The numbers that tell the story

The halftime stat sheet is a flashing warning sign for Ohio State:

  • Field Goal %: TCU 47% (15–32), Ohio State 36% (10–28)

  • 3PT %: TCU 54% (7–13), Ohio State 18% (2–11)

  • Turnovers: TCU 2, Ohio State 6

  • Rebounds: TCU 19, Ohio State 15

That three-point gap is massive. TCU has hit seven triples already, while Ohio State has only managed two. Combine that with the turnover edge, and it explains why the Frogs have been able to build and then balloon the lead.

Who’s leading the way

For Ohio State, Micah Robinson has been the bright spot, leading the Buckeyes with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting. But he hasn’t had enough help, and Ohio State’s perimeter production has been nearly nonexistent.

TCU’s scoring has been more balanced, with A. Bynum among the early contributors (6 points at the half), while the Frogs’ backcourt shot-making has been the difference-maker in momentum swings.

Win probability and the feel of the game

ESPN Analytics has TCU as a heavy favorite at halftime, and the eye test matches it. The Horned Frogs have controlled tempo, won the shot-quality battle, and — most importantly — finished the half like a team that expects to move on.

What Ohio State must change in the second half

If the Buckeyes are going to make this a game, the path is clear:

  1. Find perimeter answers — 2-for-11 from three won’t cut it, especially against a team already raining shots.

  2. Value the ball — six turnovers have fueled TCU’s momentum and prevented Ohio State from setting its defense.

  3. Stop the bleeding in runs — the late 11–0 burst can’t happen again; Ohio State needs a steady start to the second half.

There’s still 20 minutes left, but Ohio State needs urgency right out of the locker room. TCU has landed the first punch — and then some. Now we’ll see if the Buckeyes have a response, or if the Horned Frogs are about to turn this into a wire-to-wire statement.
