A Star-Studded Roster Unites and Delivers a Statement Win
Fresh off a dominant 15-5 victory over Brazil in their Pool B opener last night, Team USA's World Baseball Classic roster has transformed from names on paper into a unified squad ready to chase gold. Team USA improves to 1-0 in Pool B.
Captain Aaron Judge set the tone early with a two-run blast to left center in the first inning, and the offense never let up—exploding for seven runs in the ninth to put the game away in front of 30,825 fans at Daikin Park in Houston.
Captain Judge Sets the Tone
At Phoenix's Papago Sports Complex earlier this week, team captain Aaron Judge addressed his star-studded teammates with a simple message: connection matters.
"Dive into everybody. Get to know them. Ask questions," Judge told the group. "We're in a tough situation and we have to have each other's backs. Just try to bond as much as you can. Have fun."
The room wasn't just full of current stars; it was packed with All-Stars, Silver Sluggers, and World Series champions. For Judge, standing before them was an honor.
On Friday night, he backed up his words with action—his 405-foot homer gave the U.S. an early 2-0 lead and set the stage for the offensive onslaught to come.
A Legend's Message
The bonding continued earlier this week at the Global Ambassador Hotel, where 23-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps delivered a powerful message: "Second place is not going to get it done."
What was supposed to be a dinner wrapping up at 9:30 PM stretched until nearly midnight as players shared stories and forged connections.
"We've only been together for a few days," reliever Brad Keller observed. "Baseball is the biggest, smallest world."
The Superstars Answer the Call
Cal Raleigh, fresh off a 60-home run season and an MVP runner-up finish, barely hesitated when manager Mark DeRosa called. Walking into a locker room filled with baseball's elite? "That's crazy to be in that spot. And very cool."
Raleigh contributed an RBI in Friday's win, drawing three walks and scoring a run as part of the relentless USA attack.
Kyle Schwarber returns for his second WBC after the heartbreaking 2023 finals loss to Japan. Despite free agency uncertainty and a newborn at home, his answer was immediate.
"There's a new team, new faces, new everything," Schwarber said. "But still the same three letters across our chest... Everyone's looking forward to making a deep run and wearing gold."
The Serviceman's Dream
For reliever Griffin Jax, the first Air Force Academy graduate to play Major League Baseball, representing his country carries profound meaning.
"With my history and military background, this was something that if I ever was given the chance, it would be the quickest yes I've ever said," Jax explained.
He's been playfully reminded by new teammate Alex Bregman—0-for-7 with three strikeouts against him—just how much hitters hate facing him. "That gave me some confidence to talk to him," Jax laughed.
The Rising Star
Roman Anthony got the call just weeks ago after Corbin Carroll's injury opened a roster spot. At 21, he's the youngest player on the team—and already soaking it all in.
"I've learned so much already, just being around this group of guys," the Red Sox outfielder said. "I'm here to win, but at the same time being the young guy, lean on them as much as I can."
Anthony made his presence felt in the opener, driving in two runs including a clutch RBI single in the eighth inning that extended the U.S. lead.
The Comeback Story
A year ago, Brad Keller was a non-roster invitee fighting for a job. Now, after a stellar 2025 and a $22 million Phillies contract, he's representing his country.
He found out while at a wedding in Cabo. The plane ride from Florida with Harper, Schwarber, Judge, and Goldschmidt sealed the experience.
"I've dreamt of playing for my country. There's nothing better."
Friday Night's Offensive Fireworks
The 15-5 rout showcased Team USA's depth and firepower:
Aaron Judge: 2-run HR (405 ft), 2 RBIs
Brice Turang: 2 doubles, 4 RBIs—the offensive star of the night
Roman Anthony: 2 RBIs, including a key 8th-inning single
Bobby Witt Jr. & Turang: 2 stolen bases each, wreaking havoc on the basepaths
Logan Webb: Earned the win with 4 solid innings
Brazil didn't go quietly—they actually outhomered Team USA 3-1 on the night. Lucas Ramirez launched two solo shots (with proud dad Manny Ramirez watching from the stands), and Vitor Mascai added a 2-run blast in the seventh. But the American bats were simply too relentless to overcome.
Team USA continues Pool B action tonight against Great Britain at 8 PM ET at Daikin Park in Houston—don't miss it!
