The Mariners erased a six-run deficit—trailing 8-2 after four innings—and broke the game open with a six-run ninth to beat the Reds 14-8 on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark in Cactus League action.
Seattle struck first in the top of the first when Randy Arozarena singled home Luke Raley for a 1-0 lead. Cincinnati answered with a five-run second, powered by JJ Bleday’s two-run double, an RBI single from TJ Friedl, and Matt McLain’s two-run double to make it 5-1.
The Mariners scratched across a run in the fourth when Brock Rodden tripled in Will Wilson, but the Reds answered in the bottom half. Friedl lifted a sacrifice fly and Elly De La Cruz ripped a two-run double as Cincinnati stretched the lead to 8-2.
Seattle’s rally gathered steam in the fifth. Dominic Canzone delivered an RBI single, a bases-loaded walk forced in another run, and Rodden added an RBI infield single to cut the deficit to 8-5.
The Mariners kept the pressure on late with contributions from the lower half of the lineup. In the seventh, Ben Rambusch drove in a run and Luis Suisbel added an RBI single to make it 8-7, and Seattle tied it in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk.
In the ninth, Felnin Celesten led off with a double and Jonny Farmelo followed with an RBI double that gave the Mariners the lead. Jared Sundstrom then lined a two-run single to add breathing room, Rodden tacked on another RBI, and Blake Davis capped the inning with a three-run homer off Ismael Machuca to make it 14-8.
Seattle finished with 17 hits and got two scoreless innings from Julian Diaz, who earned the win. Luis Mey took the loss as the Reds’ bullpen couldn’t hold the late lead. The Mariners’ young bats came alive late, turning a potential loss into a convincing spring win.
