Ohio State's 2027 Playoff Path Just Got Easier (and Longer)
The 24-team playoff is coming. Here's the format as reported, and what it actually means for the Buckeyes.
## The format (reported, not final)
ESPN's Pete Thamel and Heather Dinich reported October 15 that the College Football Playoff is closing in on a 24-team field starting with the 2027 season. Dinich followed up October 16: the CFP and ESPN have a handshake agreement on the media rights, reportedly worth about $345 million extra per year on average. Final approvals are still pending, with a December 1 deadline to lock it in. So treat all of this as reported, not done. But it's happening.
The reported structure, the "19+4+1":
- 19 at-large bids
- 4 automatic bids for the Power 4 conference champions (however each league determines its champ)
- 1 automatic bid for the highest-ranked Group of 6 team
- Seeds 1–8 get a first-round bye, then host a second-round game on campus
- Seeds 9–16 host first-round games on campus
- The first two rounds are on campus. Quarterfinals and semifinals go to the New Year's Six bowls. Title game stays in January.
- Conference championship games are expected to be gone
- The season starts a week earlier
- The eventual champion plays 16 to 17 games
The bracket math, straight from ESPN's reporting: 16 vs. 17, 15 vs. 18, all the way down. Survive the first weekend, then go on the road to somebody's campus in December.
Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti, who drove this whole thing, says "tiered incentives" — byes, home games — keep the regular season meaningful. The SEC's Greg Sankey, the last holdout, is on board now.
## What it means for Ohio State
Ohio State lives in the top 8. That's not homer talk, that's just what the program is. And in this format, living in the top 8 is everything.
**The bye gets easier to grab.** Top 8 instead of top 4. You don't need a perfect season anymore. An 11-2 Ohio State team gets a bye most years. Maybe even 10-2.
**December in the Shoe.** This is the big one. A second-round playoff game in Columbus in December is the best home-field advantage in the sport, and it's not close. Nobody wants to fly into Ohio in December to play Ohio State.
**No more title-game landmine.** One less neutral-field game against a hot team right before the playoff. The Big Ten Championship Game is apparently dying, and honestly, good riddance — one fewer way to blow a seeding in early December.
**The catch: it's four wins now, not three.** Under the 12-team format, a top-4 seed needed three wins. Now a top-8 seed needs four. The run is longer, the field is deeper, and 16–17 games is an NFL schedule for college kids. Depth and health matter more than ever.
Net it out: for a program like Ohio State, this is a win. The playoff stops being something you sneak into and becomes something you survive. The bye plus a December home game is a golden ticket.
## Toss Boss take
Twenty-four teams. No conference title games. Playoff football in the Shoe in December. The sport's turning into the NFL with homework, and Ohio State is built for exactly that. Just keep the offensive line healthy for 17 games.
