Week 6 Report Card: Grading My Own Picks
Time to eat my own cooking. Three picks went up last week, all three games are final, and I'm grading every single one — no excuses, no spin. 1-2 straight up. Overall grade: D.
6 Alabama vs 2 Georgia — F
Toss Boss pick: Alabama 30, Georgia 27
Final: Georgia 20, Alabama 17
Trusted the Tide at home in Tuscaloosa. Bad bet. Georgia's ground game did the grinding — 206 rushing yards as a team, even without leading rusher Nate Frazier, with Dwight Phillips Jr. going for 120. Gunnar Stockton was 18-of-22 for 249 yards with a touchdown and a pick. Keelon Russell threw for 185 and a score, but Alabama's offense went quiet in the fourth. The finish had controversy — officials swallowed the flag on what looked like a clear pass interference on Georgia safety JK Bolden, then a Dijon Lee personal foul let Georgia run out the clock. Doesn't matter. I picked the wrong team and the wrong score. F.
1 Texas vs Oklahoma — F
Toss Boss pick: Texas 27, Oklahoma 17
Final: Oklahoma 27, Texas 24
The dead Texas call, and I own it. Texas led 17-7 at the half, then the Arch Manning experience happened: two fourth-quarter interceptions — one a pick-six by Peyton Bowen that put OU up 24-17, the second to Courtland Guillory with 19 seconds left to set up the walk-off. Tate Sandell drilled a 47-yarder at the horn. Manning threw three touchdowns and 260 yards, but the turnovers buried them. Unranked OU beat a No. 1 team for the first time since 2007. I had Texas by 10. They lost by 3. My pick, my miss. F.
19 USC at Penn State — A
Toss Boss pick: USC 31, Penn State 28
Final: USC 31, Penn State 23
Called the 31 to the number. Jayden Maiava was surgical in the White Out — 21-of-33, 301 yards, three touchdowns. Trent Mosley went for 9 catches, 111 yards and a score, King Miller ran for 102 and a touchdown, and Christian Pierce punching the ball out with 3:59 left sealed it in front of a Beaver Stadium-record 114,419. Penn State fought — Rocco Becht threw for 289 and a touchdown and the Lions hung around — but USC's offense averaged nearly eight yards a play through the first three quarters. Only miss was Penn State's final tally, and even that was within five. Crown jewel of the card. A.
The GPA
1-2 straight up. Two F's and one A. The USC pick was nearly perfect, but the other two weren't even close on the winner. Overall: D. My bad — the Texas call especially. Week 7 picks drop soon.
